Cuvier was not the first to establish that fossils were dead animals - both Robert Hooke and Leonardo da Vinci had already proposed as much. However, he was the first to propose and explain how many fossils were actually animals that had gone extinct.
The mejiro, or Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonicus) was introduced into O’ahu in 1929. It has since expanded its range to become the most abundant bird on the Hawaiian islands, adding to the threats already faced by many of Hawaii’s endangered native birds. | +
